Tewkesbury Scout Group

3rd Tewkesbury Scout Group started in 1956 and now has two Beaver Colonies, two Cub Packs and a Scout Troop, with over 140 young people taking part in Scouting activities every week.

Our usual meeting place is in the Scout HQ which is opposite the Roses Theatre in Tewkesbury; however we also have many visits and activities away from the HQ.

Beavers

Beavers are the youngest members of the group aged between 6 and 8. Our Beaver Colonies meet weekly on a Wednesday and Friday. Please see our times page for more information.

Beavers are about “Fun and Friends”. They play games, indoors and out, try different crafts, and learn to play together as well as earn their own badges that can be worn on their uniforms. They also join in some group activities, District activities and visits to the fire station and other locations in Tewkesbury. The Beavers always join the Group for the annual St George’s and Remembrance Day parades through Tewkesbury.

Cubs

Cubs are aged 8 to 10 ½. They meet on Monday and Tuesday evenings – please see our times page for more information.

Activities for Cubs tend to build on the skills learned in Beavers. There are more badges for them to complete as well as games to play, visits, cooking and crafts to join in. Cubs participate in District competitions and activities such as the Swimming Gala, District Hikes and District Cub Water Sports day.

Cubs regularly go camping during the summer and on indoor Pack Holidays to activity centres at other times of the year. During these trips they have the opportunity to try lots of new activities such as archery, air rifle shooting, canoeing and traditional Scouting skills such as fire lighting and bivouac making.

The Cubs also join the Group for the annual St Georges and Remembrance Day parades through Tewkesbury.

Scouts

The oldest part of the Scout Group is the Scout Troop – Scouts are aged between 10 ½ and 14. We meet on Wednesday evenings usually in our HQ but in the summer we try to meet outside.

The Chief Scouts Gold Award is the hardest badge a Scout can earn and through our weekly activities we encourage the majority of Scouts to achieve it. Scouts can also participate in Activity badges either at Scouts or at home.

Traditional Scouting skills are very important to us, so we can regularly be found camping and hiking around Gloucestershire, as well as knots, pioneering, fire lighting and cooking. Of course games are just as important to the Scouts and encourage team building.

We take part in District competitions such as the annual swimming gala and Malvern Challenge – a weekend of camping and activities with Scouts from all over the country with the main activity being a seven mile activity hike.

Every three years 3rd Tewkesbury Scouts have the opportunity to join with other Scouts and Explorers in the District to participate in an international expedition. The last two trips have been to Kandersteg International Scout Centre in Switzerland.

Scouts are also very supportive of their local community and have recently helped the Rotary Club plant crocus bulbs to highlight the irradiation of Polio throughout the world; run BBQ’s for the Rotary Club Car Rally and Firework night and local School fetes as well as handing out water to Tewkesbury Half Marathon and Fun Run runners.

The Scouts are the final part of the Scout Group that participates in the annual St George’s and Remembrance Day parades through Tewkesbury.

Adults

Each section has a leader team of trained adults, however we are always looking for additional help and resources. Adults can help in a number of ways, from helping at an evening by becoming an occasional helper, assistant or leader or by joining the Group Executive Committee to help raising funds and managing the Group.

If you are an adult and think that you would like to help then please contact us using the form on the right of this page.
